ARXX ICFs: Superior resistance against severe weather
An “active to extremely active” hurricane season is expected for the Atlantic Basin this year according to the seasonal outlook issued by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center. Across the entire Atlantic Basin for the six-month season, NOAA is projecting:
- 14 to 23 Named Storms (top winds of 39 mph or higher), including:
- 8 to 14 Hurricanes (top winds of 74 mph or higher), of which:
- 3 to 7 could be Major Hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of at least 111 mph)
In addition you can check for daily warnings on the U.S. Severe weather map. The map provides a variety of warnings, advisories and watches for tornados, high winds, floods, fire weather and tropical storms.
Now is the time to remind people planning to build that ARXX ICFs provide an energy-efficient building system for walls and foundations that creates a building envelope with superior strength and resistance to the dangers that go hand-in-hand with severe weather. Click here to watch of an ARXX Edge (formerly ECO-Block) home withstand an F2 tornado.
ARXX ICFs also provide a safe room solution. In fact there are several funding programs in the U.S. that provide funds for safe room construction including U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loans, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Block Grant funds, Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgage insured financing, and the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). More information regarding these financing and grant programs is available at www.fema.gov.
ARXX ICFs meet the demanding requirements of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for safe rooms and shelter performance standards and have all major code approvals including Florida High Velocity Hurricane Zone approval.
ARXX has also worked with the University of Florida to build a few of their "Hurricane Houses". These homes are designed and used as windstorm damage mitigation training and demonstration centers. Read more about the Hurricane Houses.

10 things you should put in houses you build in 2010
The last thing any home builder wants is a reputation for turning out substandard houses loaded with the cheapest materials available. Sure, the company might make money for a while, but in the end, the negative word-of-mouth will spread faster than you can say "class action lawsuit," and everyone knows where that could lead.
Conscientious builders, instead, try to turn a profit but look for ways to make houses more energy-efficient, more durable, more attractive, and are inexpensive to operate. Simply put: They look for ways to build better houses and maintain a credible reputation.
There are different ways to build a better house, of course. Using tried-and-true techniques that work should be the first option. But because building scientists and manufacturers have learned much in the last 25 years, there are a variety of ways builders can improve their products without any dramatic changes to their business.Builder online has compiled a list of 10 products, technology and systems that will be important in the coming years. And it’s no surprise that with current green initiatives products that deliver energy efficiency will lead the way.
