ARXX Tips

*   When building with ICFs, save time on the jobsite by pre-planning your job. When the first row of forms are placed, have all opening bucks already prepared and know where (and at what elevation) they will be placed.

*   When applying siding, drywall or any other building materials to an ICF wall, use the recommended fastener. Metal webbed ICF's such as ARXX Steel, or plastic webbed ICF's such as ARXX Edge and ARXX Prime, work well with a self tapping, course threaded screw.

March housing starts in US and Canada

U.S. housing starts rose more than expected in March to their highest level since November 2008 and new home permits jumped to a 17-month high, according to a government report on April 16th. This news offers further hope that the housing market recovery remains on course.

According to the US Commerce Department, housing starts rose 1.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 626,000 units. February's housing starts were revised to show a 1.1 percent increase, which previously reported a 5.9 percent drop.

New building permits, which give a sense of future home construction, jumped 7.5 percent to a 685,000-unit pace last month - the highest level since October 2008. Permits rose 2.4 percent in February and were up 34.1 percent from March 2009, the biggest year-to-year gain since February 1992.

In Canada, according to data released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC) on April 12th, 2010, housing starts were down 1.5% to seasonally adjusted annual rate of 197,300 units in March 2010.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) is available for municipalities

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) included several key funding opportunities for energy efficient projects at the local level, including first time monies for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. Funding was additionally provided for state energy programs, weatherization assistance and transportation efficiency among other initiatives. The EECBG program allows cities and counties to fund a range of projects that reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

In many ways cities are well suited to advance energy efficiency initiatives.  Block grants such as the EECBG represent the first ever commitment of federal resources supporting the efforts of city and county leaders to expand local initiatives and implement new programs. To find out more about this opportunity, you can review the report issued by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. The report provides highlights of the EECBG program and additional sources of financial support for energy efficiency initiatives. There are also examples of programs that can be implemented using EECBG funds.

Green Building Trends to Watch in 2010

Justin Moresco from Earth2tech got out his green building crystal ball to present some of the most important trends shaping the industry in 2010:

Energy Codes Will Demand Greater Energy Efficiency: Ever since the energy crisis of the 1970s faded out of memory, energy codes adopted by states and other jurisdictions across the country have been making small incremental steps toward demanding more efficiency out of buildings. However, many feel that not enough is being done and a consensus is forming to develop strict standards for energy efficiency.

The new versions of the “model codes” currently under development — ASHRAE 90.1 and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) — will likely require a 30 percent increase in energy efficiency. ASHRAE 90.1 is planned to be available in 2010 and the IECC is targeting a 2012 release.

Contact us for your next project and we will show you how ARXX ICFs will help you meet the new standards.

Building Materials Get Smarter: new smarter, more energy-efficient building materials are coming to market. A good example is the electrochromic technologies that can darken or lighten the tint of a window when in contact with an electrical current and manage the sunlight that passes through.
